Once a group of 13 small British colonies, America is today the world’s largest economy and one of the most powerful countries in the world. Its currency makes up a large share of global foreign reserves, and almost every major geopolitical decision is made with the United States in mind.

But America was not always this powerful.

America’s story began with 13 colonies and moved forward through the struggle for independence. The country faced many major challenges, including slavery, the Civil War, economic crises, territorial expansion, and two World Wars. A country that once struggled to manage its own existence and economy eventually became the world’s greatest power. But how?

How did America overtake old powers like Britain, France, and Russia to become a superpower? What decisions, wars, economic changes, and strategies were behind this transformation?

To explore these deep and complex questions, we are joined on the Padhaku Nitin World Affairs Modern Empires Series by Professor Archana Ojha — one of India’s most senior scholars of American Studies and International Relations, who has spent decades closely studying and understanding American foreign policy, American history, and its global strategy.
